Leather Experiments

I had a range of different types of leather so I experimented using wire with a few of them to structure them, I also folded and sewed some of them, being influenced by the fossils, then I charred and imprinted on each of them with the hot pen using different ends to try different imprints I could make, each leather reacted differently due to their thickness and softness. I discovered the thin, black leather worked very well because the imprints were very clear and the white, thick, soft one scrunched up due to the heat.

Paper Manipulation

I experimented by manipulating, folding and scoring paper to get an idea of some kind of structure I could use before I use the leather.

Fragility, Impermanence & Protection Project

This is our new brief and we have been given the words, fragility, Impermanence and Protection; we have to chose one or all of these words. I'm looking more at protection and these are the fossils I looked at at the museum to develop the accessory I plan to make.

Larger Scale

This is the burning on a larger scale. I dropped watered ink down a large roll of paper that was suspended from a wire and burnt into the paper from both sides to get different affects and textures of the burning.

Burning Experiments

Throughout these experiments I used watercolour paper and the technique of burning into it. I used watercolour paper because the burning affect was more effective on this type of paper. I chose to burn it because it fits my concept of broken, delicate, fragile and a falling to pieces state. I also added wax to one test piece to see if that would suit my concept better. From doing this I think it's better without the wax because adding the wax eliminates the delicate/ fragile affect I was aiming to achieve. Once I had tested these out, I developed this into drawing the microscoped tears of a human into the watercolour paper with the hot pen.
